One of the best things the Internet does is enable people to connect. There are dating websites, retail websites, support forums, educational website, medical websites and a host of other websites which enable Internet users to interact with those who share a common interest. Likewise there are also websites which put those who share career interests in contact with each other. Through these websites Internet users can communicate with others in their own industry or in an industry they hope to break into. These websites are essentially the cocktail parties of our generation. However, users of these websites should exercise caution when using the Internet to network. This article will provide some useful tips for how to successfully network online for the purpose of finding a job.

One very important tip we can offer for networking online is to keep all communications professional. This is very important because Internet users never really know who they are going to encounter when networking online. Failing to maintain an air of professionalism while networking online can really negatively impact an Internet user’s chance of landing a job because they will not be taken seriously. Another reason why it is so important to avoid unprofessional behavior when networking online is it may be possible for potential employers to access these unprofessional communications for years to come. Unlike an inappropriate comment made at a cocktail party which may be forgotten over time online comments may be available for all to see for awhile to come.

Another tip for networking online for the purpose of finding a job is to cast a wide net. Internet users should not be afraid to reach out in as many ways as possible to network with those in the same career field. This does not mean you should register with every career networking website around and begin posting your contact information and career details with reckless abandon. However, it also does not mean you should be overly cautious and optimistic about the types of contacts you make. Obviously you should make efforts to network with those in your direct industry but you should also consider networking with those in related fields or fields which often work in close conjunction with members of your field. This is important because these individuals are likely doing the same type of networking and can put you in contact with influential people in your own industry.

It is also extremely important to avoid burning bridges when you are networking online. It may be tempting to cut ties with someone who has said something negative about you or someone who has offended you in some way. This can be tempting because the Internet is so expansive that you may think you will not likely encounter this person again. However, even though the Internet is enormous the size of your industry is a greater indication of whether or not you will encounter these individuals again. If you are in a relatively small industry it is very likely you will encounter this person again and again during the course of your career. It is also likely that you have common friends, acquaintances and even colleagues. For this reason you should avoid these types of relationship breaks.

When networking online you should always remember to avoid speaking negatively about your previous employers. This is a problem many job seekers make and it can really make a bad first impression on potential employers or on those who may be in a position to put you in connection with influential people in your industry.

Finally, those who are networking online for purposes of career advancement should be careful of networking websites which allow users to remain anonymous to a certain degree. This is important because it is possible you may encounter someone from your own company who is also networking online. This can be damaging to your career because if your company learns you are looking for a new job, it can negatively impact your job status.

Online Job Search:Posting Your Resume Online

One way a job seeker can reach a large number of employers is by posting their resume online. This can be done on a personal website or by entering the resume in a database managed by websites which host job advertisements such as monster.com or hotjobs.yahoo.com. Having a website available online can provide a great deal of exposure for a job seeker but it can also create some unique problems as well. This article will discuss some of the unique concerns when posting a resume online and will also provide a few tips for how job seekers should go about posting their resume online.

One of the biggest concerns in regards to posting a resume online is valid for job seekers who are currently implored. This is the concern that current employer will encounter the online resume and learn the employee is seeking a new job. There is certainly nothing wrong with employees seeking out other possible jobs, however, most employees do not wish to make it common knowledge when they are considering leaving their company. Fortunately many of these job posting website realize this is a concern and have provided options for these job seekers to remain anonymous. In most cases information such as the name, address and current employer will be kept confidential. This allows the job seeker to search for jobs without the current employer accidentally stumbling upon the employees resume online.

Another concern job seekers may have when posting their resume online is receiving contacts from those who they are not interested in hearing from. While it is true that job seekers are posting their resumes for exposure this does not mean they want to be contacted by job search agencies or individuals who do not have an available job for which the job seeker is qualified for or interested in. Again, many job posting websites realize this is a concern for job seekers and provide some forms of protection for these job seekers. Specifically some job posting websites may allow the users to specify which types of agencies they are accepting inquiries from, the locations they are interested in finding a job in and the type of employers they are seeking. For example a user may be able to specify they are not interested in being contacted by job placement agencies.

When job seekers are posting their resume online they may want to follow a few basic guidelines. Obviously the resume that is posted online should be carefully edited to ensure it is free of typographical errors. It should also be reviewed to make sure it highlights the skills and previous work experience of the job seeker. The job seeker should also make sure the information on the available is accurate and not misleading.

Job seekers posting resumes online may also wish to keep the resume fairly generic so they can use it to apply for a number of jobs without making major changes to the resume each time they apply. Some of the available job posting websites allow the user to store more than one resume in the database. When this is possible the user should take advantage of this opportunity to create resumes which are more tailored for different types of jobs. Most of these websites will not allow the user to store an infinite number of resumes online so the user will likely still want to have one generic resume stored in the database. Then they can replace other tailored resume after a sufficient amount of time has passed and the user is fairly sure he is not being seriously considered for the position for which he applied.

It is also important to make sure your most valuable skills are really showcased when you post a resume online. This is especially true for websites which only allow you to store one resume in the database. The job seeker should carefully consider the skills necessary for the type of position he is seeking and make sure the resume shows how the potential employee has demonstrated these skills in the past.

Online Job Search Mistake 101

Posted by Carlos | Posted in Online Jobs Niche | Posted on 20-05-2009

Learning from your mistakes is always a good idea because you do not want to go through life repeating the same mistakes over and over. An even better idea is to learn from the mistakes of others. This way you never actually have to go through the experience of making the mistakes but you gain the benefit of learning what not to do. Everyone makes mistakes but online job searchers seem to make a lot of them. This article will discuss some of the common mistakes made by online job searchers and provide advice on how you can avoid these blunders.

One of the most common mistakes made by online job searchers is rushing too quickly to apply for an open position. The nature of the Internet has created a society with very little patience. Search engines generate millions of results in a mere fraction of a second and Internet users have come to expect these types of high speed results. With just a few keystrokes you can generate listings for hundreds of job openings in your field and it can be very tempting to fire off your application at the same speed. Job seekers often make this mistake because they are afraid that if they do not apply quickly they will miss out on a great opportunity.

This is certainly a valid concern because there are some job advertisements which will only be posted for a day or two before being removed. However, rushing to apply and submitting a resume and cover letter than is sub par will just be as detrimental to your job search as not responding at all. In fact it can be even worse if you make a really bad impression that the employer remembers when you respond to future job advertisements. To avoid making this mistake always make sure the resume, cover letter and application materials you submit for a job opening will make a really positive first impression. Take care to carefully proofread and edit all documents to make sure they are free of errors and really highlight your skills and relevant work experience.

Another mistake many online job searchers make is relying on a generic resume. In this economy where unemployment rates are rising at alarming rates and there is intense competition for every job opening, you need to make sure your resume and cover letter really stand out against the competition. The way to do this is by examining the job advertisement very carefully to determine which skills are most important to the employer. With this in mind edit and format your resume to make sure your relevant experience is showcased to its best advantage. Consider using keywords similar to the ones the employer used in the job advertisement to make it clear you are an excellent candidate for the position.

Finally, one of the glaring mistakes many online job searchers make which can really cost them the chance of being selected for an interview is failing to follow the potential employer’s instructions. The employer may list specific requirements such as whether resumes should be included as an attachment or in the body of an email, where resumes should be sent and what to include in the subject line of the email. Job seekers who ignore these instructions are likely to be disqualified from consideration for the position immediately. In some cases the resume and cover letter may never even reach the hiring manager. By simply following the instructions for applying for a position you put yourself ahead of the competition before your resume is even reviewed.

It may seem unbelievable to some but finding jobs online is not always easy. Even those who have never searched for a job online have likely heard of the popular job search websites such as Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com and indeed.com and assume the existence of these websites makes finding a job online easy. However, this is simply not true. There are a number of other factors which contribute to the success a job seeker will have when conducting a job search online including the number of available jobs in their industry, the amount of time they have to dedicate to a job search and the quality of the job search websites they are using. This article will provide basic tips for finding jobs online.

The first tip we have for finding jobs online is to investigate job search websites carefully before registering with them and using them for your job search. Most of the well known websites offering job search features are reputable. However, if these websites are relatively unknown it is worthwhile to ensure the company operating the website is legitimate before using these websites for your job search and pursuing job opportunities found on these websites. This is a good idea for your own protection. It is a also a good idea because it will save you a great deal of time and effort if you learn a website is not worth using before spending too much time searching for jobs through this website.

When trying to find jobs online you should also remember to be persistent in your job search. You may see many job advertisements come and go quickly. This is because many employers remove their advertisement from a job posting website after they receive a large number of applications from highly qualified candidates. If you are persistent and check job search websites on a daily basis to check for new job listings you are less likely to miss out on great opportunities than other job seekers who only check job search websites on a weekly basis.

When searching for jobs online it is also a good idea to seek out job search websites that cater to your industry. There are many job search websites available which include job advertisements for a wide variety of industries. However, it can be much easier to find a job in your specific industry if you seek out job search websites which focus exclusively on your industry. There will also be much less competition for these jobs because these specialized search engines are not as popular as the ones open to all industries. Those who opt to use these job search engines should not exclude the other job search websites from their search though. In a case where there are job search websites specifically for your industry it is worthwhile to check regular job search websites and specialized job search websites on a regular basis because you never know where employers in your industry will post job openings.

Finally, when you are looking for jobs online do not make the mistake of limiting your search to job search websites. Consider visiting the websites of potential employers directly to learn about job openings they have. Also, take advantage of career networking websites to meet and interact with those in your industry. Making these types of contacts is a good idea because you never know when a job opportunity will present itself.
